Throughout history, anti-philosophers have sought to undermine the entirety of philosophical thought by casting doubt upon its core objectives. Contemporary anti-philosophers have followed this pattern, specifically targeting Avicennian philosophy through epistemological and ontological doubts to challenge the broader framework of Islamic philosophy. They operate under the assumption that by misrepresenting Avicenna’s views on the limits of human intellect in reaching logical definitions, they can claim a 'concession' from him. Their ultimate goal is to propagate the notion that Islamic philosophical systems are incapable of providing even fundamental rational insights.
To analyze these doubts and uncover their underlying agendas, one must first identify the primary source of knowledge in Avicenna's system. Although this school is often thought to rely exclusively on pure intellect and acquired knowledge, intuition actually serves as a foundational pillar in Avicenna's explicit teachings. Consequently, the attempts to portray Islamic philosophical systems as incapable of attaining knowledge are directed at this very source. Investigating these doubts—specifically regarding the perception of essences and the knowledge of the soul—and cleansing philosophical thought of such fallacies is a crucial task. Such an inquiry will deepen our understanding of the epistemological foundations and true aims of great philosophers like Avicenna, guiding us closer to the truth."
