In Shia traditions, there are noble hadiths that present intellect ('aql) as the first created being and the most obedient creature of God. These traditions, which subsequently refer to the obedience of intellect to the divine command to "move away" and "draw near," carry a profound meaning that necessitates even more serious contemplation. The primary concern of this research is the interpretation of these traditions and approaching the intended meaning of the Speaker [God].
When reviewing the legacy of divine philosophers, in the works of Plotinus we encounter a creation called "Intellect" (Nous), which is situated at a level after the One—who stands at the summit of the hierarchy of existence. The characteristics of the Plotinian Intellect closely correspond to the "Compassionate Breath" (Nafas-e-Rahmānī) in Islamic mysticism. This research concludes that not only does the Plotinian Intellect and the Compassionate Breath in mysticism share more than a mere verbal similarity with the intellect mentioned in the traditions, but they also share a conceptual correspondence. This is because all three are introduced as the first emanation and serve as a substrate for the extension and diffusion of the Truth (God) throughout existence.
Using a descriptive-analytical method and by comparing the doctrine of the Plotinian Intellect with the mystical Compassionate Breath, this paper has successfully mapped the characteristics of the Plotinian Intellect, the Compassionate Breath, and the intellect mentioned in the traditions as the first created being onto one another, thereby offering a clearer understanding of "intellect" ('aql) in Shia traditions.
