This article is divided into two parts: Part one explains in general the gist of the Rule of ‘Al-WÁÎid’ and then follows its historical development until the time of Ghazali—outlining the social and intellectual milieu of the period; Part two critiques Ghazali’s views with respect to the Rule of ‘Al- WÁÎid’ itself, as well as its application to God.
