In their spiritual journeys, mystics should travel through different stages in which they gain mystical experiences some of which can hardly be expressed to others. Elaborating the spiritual state of annihilation (fanaʾ), this paper attempts to show how understanding this state is difficult and controversial in Islamic mysticism. The author attempts to discuss different aspects of this phenomenon and demonstrate that the only mystical school which has had any success in explaining the reality of fanaʾ is the school of Transcendent Philosophy.
