The aim of the paper is to shed light on subject matters in different branches of mysticism. Empirical, transmitted, rational demonstrational and intuitional knowledge are four sources of human knowledge through which various branches of sciences have been established. Among sciences, philosophy and theoretical mysticism (‘irfan) are derived from rational thinking more than others. According to the author, arguments in theoretical ‘mysticism do not merely rely on personal intuition and inspiration; rather its principles – like philosophy’s– are also supported by rational demonstration because it contains perceptional propositions. This is in contrast to practical mysticism which has no rational demonstration. It consists of practical advices for the wayfarer; however, according to the author, there are two further branches of practical mysticism– namely intuitional and transmitted mysticism. Intuitional mysticism is nothing more than the mystic’s personal intuitions which can be conveyed to others. Transmitted mysticism consists of pieces of practical advice narrated by mystics or the wayfarer– the advice and practical principle which they have already successfully experienced on the course of their own spiritual journeys.

The focus of this paper is to explore a few important mystical points in the Chapter of Wisdom of Malikiyyah in Fusus al-Hikam which deals with the concept of Lutiyyah.
The chapter of Luti in Fusus al-Hikam consists of a wisdom revealed to the Prophet Loath (as). This wisdom was the result of his intense longing for God referred to in the Qur’an. Dawud al-Qaysari introduces the main four topics which are examined in this chapter: 1- weakness of existence in human beings and other creatures is inherited in their essence. 2. Being perfect knowledge as obstacle for mystic’s free activities 3. Revealing the secrets of Divine Determination
Another important issue in this chapter is natural genetic contradiction in natural things on the one hand and intellectual contradiction among believers and unbelievers on the other. Here, the author of the book explains the concept of Unity and how multiplicity is the cause of all contradictions in the physical world.

Mystics and Philosophers’ views on Emerging Multiplicity from Absolute Unity

With a mystical approach, the paper briefly elaborates the difference between the two methods of mysticism and philosophy in dealing with the issues of the creation of the universe, the individual unity of existence, the concept of multiplicities as an unreal phenomenon in mysticism (‘irfan) and how the individual existents exist before they come into the realm of determinations and the physical realm. According to the mystico-philosophical principles, multiplicity logically cannot emerge from Absolute Unity. The paper attempts to show how this can be justified by mystics and philosophers. It also discusses their different approaches to the issue of the manifestation of God’s names and attributes in the realm of multiplicity. In this comparative discussion, some of Ibn Arabi’s ideas will be examined as well. It worth to note that the ‘irfani and mystical principles examined in this paper are mainly based on Ayatullah Jawadi Amuli’s explanations and very rarely the arguments of other mystics are examined unless where their arguments are required for more clarification. As for the principles of the peripatetics, the paper focuses solely on Ibn Sina’s thought on the relevant issues.

Does the science of Theoretical Mysticism exist?

The possibility of theoretical mysticism depends on a few paradigms: a) the possibility of direct mystical knowledge b) this kind of knowledge’s being credibly able to find the realities c) Man is capable of having direct and intuitional knowledge d) we accept that personal intuitional knowledge can be conveyed to others. After showing how the above paradigms have been rejected by different mystical and philosophical schools in the East and the West, the author attempts to demonstrate that theoretical mysticism’s being possible depends on resolving the above four paradigms. With a comparative approach the paper also discusses the case of mystical philosophy and whether it is credible.

In their spiritual journeys, mystics should travel through different stages in which they gain mystical experiences some of which can hardly be expressed to others. Elaborating the spiritual state of annihilation (fanaʾ), this paper attempts to show how understanding this state is difficult and controversial in Islamic mysticism. The author attempts to discuss different aspects of this phenomenon and demonstrate that the only mystical school which has had any success in explaining the reality of fanaʾ is the school of Transcendent Philosophy.

The paper discusses the situation and role of cognition in a wayfarer’s spiritual journey. The argument is presented with a focus on Allamah Javadi’s views on this subject which are based primarily on the Unity of God and the Right Path and the concept of wilayah in the Shari’a and Shi’a Islamic thought. Having examined his view, the paper attempts to criticise false mysticism in its

Islam’s mysticism (‘irfan) along with its profound principles is a reliable, intellectual system of thought which establishes a rational method for understanding the reality of the universe. The paper attempts to give a logical analysis of a few mystical principles to prove this assertion.
